Rewarding staff members and thanking customers for their business is well worth the cost. I thought my brand-new manager was insane when he asked his assistant to start sending out gift baskets to any of our employees who got married, had a baby, or if there was a death in their household.

That was the first year. The next year he included a line item to send congratulations baskets to every brand-new employee who entered our office and to send out a present basket when staff members had been there 5 years and at 5 year increments. Being in finance, I thought he was crazy and informed him so since providing them a raise every year was enough. He had me look at the turnover of our workplace and we made a bet-- I lost-- the staff members began to feel appreciated and we've had fewer turnovers. More clients have actually stayed with us too.
